Cheerio Eagles turn 80
By Netball SA
The EZ Residential Eagles will celebrate their 80th anniversary in 2009. The club was formed in 1928 by Gladys Brooks under the name Sparklers, being renamed in 1931. The club, strongly affiliated in the Western Suburbs, won its first A grade premiership in 1933 and had four teams by 1939.
After three decades, including a seven-year break due to the war, the club had made itself a presence, participating in finals for seven consecutive years, coming away with two premierships, expanding to include junior teams and, by 1970 fielding 20 teams in the competition. However after some disappointment in the 70s the club scaled back to just seven teams by 1981.
After rebuilding, Cheerio found success, managing to have a team in each of the top junior grades in 1987. In 1988 Cheerio merged with northern suburbs club Aquarians in an effort to strengthen its senior grades.
Cheerio was one of the founding clubs in the introduction of the State League, but since then success has escaped the club with such a dense history.
In 2005 the club developed an alliance with the Woodville West Torrens Football Club, taking on the name “Cheerio Eagles” and incorporating blue into the green and gold uniforms.
The Eagles will be celebrating with an 80th anniversary dinner at Adelaide Oval on Saturday 22nd August.
2009 promises to be an exciting season for the 80th year of the EZ Residential Eagles, who will be including a breast cancer support fundraiser in their club day in order to further develop a community focus. The club day, which will be held in June, will include components to raise money for breast cancer research – a very worthy cause, given the number of women who succumb to breast cancer each year. Netball is a sport dominated by women, so it is a great way to raise awareness of female related causes.
